The shock tower carries the upper shock mounts and takes the full load of every landing. Any flex there lets shock geometry move under load and makes damping inconsistent exactly when you need it most. On a rear-heavy buggy the rear tower sees the majority of landing force, so it is worth inspecting for hairline cracks after any big hit.
