The Sledgehammer is Traxxas's belted tire, and the belt is the whole point. At the speeds an 8S X-Maxx reaches, an unbelted tire balloons outward under centrifugal force — the contact patch shrinks, the truck gets vague and skittish, and in extreme cases the tire can fail. The internal belt holds the tire's shape at speed, which means a consistent, larger contact patch, dramatically better high-speed stability, and far more confidence when you're running flat-out.
The trade-off is a slightly firmer ride and a bit more rotating mass than a standard AT tire, but for anyone chasing top speed or running big open spaces, belted tires are close to mandatory rather than optional. These come factory-glued, which matters even more on a belted tire where a clean, even bead is harder to achieve by hand.
