The shock body is the heart of the damper — it holds the oil, guides the piston, and takes the side loads that come from a suspension arm working through its full travel. On a truck as heavy and powerful as the X-Maxx, a dented or scored shock body will cause the seals to leak and the damping to go inconsistent, which shows up as a truck that packs down on jump landings or wallows through rough sections.
The black anodized finish is more than cosmetic. Anodizing hardens the aluminum surface, which improves resistance to the scuffs and scrapes that come from rocks and debris, and gives the shock a clean, stealthy look that suits darker builds. Rebuilding one shock at a time is a practical way to spread out maintenance cost rather than replacing complete assemblies.
