A cracked half or a stripped screw boss lets that alignment drift, and once the mesh is off the gears wear rapidly. Catching it and replacing the housing is a far smaller job, and a far smaller bill, than replacing a destroyed gearset.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCommon reasons to need these include a case split by a hard impact, screw bosses that no longer hold the halves clamped together, or a rebuild where starting with a fresh housing makes more sense than reusing a fatigued one.
